Smile Enhancement Dentistry

All forms of so called smile enhancement dentistry are on upswing as new dental procedures become easier and more affordable to the general population.

Smile enhancement or cosmetic dentistry deviates from normal dentistry in that it focuses mainly on aesthetic dental issues as opposed to issues such as tooth maintenance, tooth aches, cavities, root canals, deep cleaning, periodontal disease, and other dental issues.

However, cosmetic dentistry still is playing an increasingly greater role in today's world with more and more people opting for cosmetic procedures in order to look younger, feel better and get ahead in their personal or professional lives. Cosmetic dentistry is not just about one kind of procedure, it can be sub divided into a few different types of dental  treatments:

Dental Implants

This is the new dentures and bridge alternative which has been making waves for about a decade. Dental implants are permanent solutions to tooth loss which could have occurred due to age, poor condition of teeth or some medical trauma. Dental implants fall under the category of cosmetic dentistry because they are not the only alternative to tooth loss. They are, however, one of the best but also most expensive. Most patients who have tried both dental implants and dentures, rave about hows dental implants make the simple act of eating much more enjoyable and trouble-free.

Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening has become so popular that it has even reached the over the counter market. Store bought whiteners have, however, a spotty record of producing good results. Choosing a professional cosmetic dentist to perform the whitening can probably give you the best results. While some people still have discolored teeth due to disease or excessive smoking, most people do note a drastic difference n their smile with this cosmetic dentistry procedure. The only downside is that a patient might feel slight tooth sensitivity after the treatment.

Dental Veneers

In this procedure, the patient's teeth are covered with a protective shell. Veneers are often suggested to people who have not met with much success with traditional whitening procedures. Or if they have had chipped or broken tooth, a veneer can attach to the original tooth restoring its appearance. Veneers can also be used to close large gaps between teeth. Dental veneers are often made of porcelain and are specifically created to match your tooth shade. It takes skill as well as a bit of artistic ability from the dentist in order to get the best results.

Dental Fillings

Even though dental fillings would usually fall under general dentistry, some types of fillings do classify as cosmetic dentistry procedures as they are made from colors or amalgams that match the color of your teeth so that are not as visible as gray, silver or gold ones.

Again, find out if and how much of your cosmetic dentistry procedure if at all is covered by your insurance company before you sign up. This is because a full mouth reconstruction or smile lift can conceivably cost you as much as $100, 000.
