Dental Braces Care
Many dental insurance plans don't cover orthodontic care such as braces, making dental braces care even more important since the expenses for brace replacement will be coming directly out of your pocket.
1) Clean Frequently
Daily cleaning is important, not only for the braces themselves but for the health of your gums. Failure to clean braces can lead to the build up of plaque around the gums which can progress to gum disease. Also, dirty dental braces are simply unsightly and can cause your breath to smell pretty bad. Also avoid sticky or chewy foods while wearing braces. They will stick to the braces making them even harder to clean. And avoid really hard candies just as jaw breakers and really hard nuts. They can put stress on the braces, weakening them.
2) Invest in an ortho kit
These are relatively inexpensive and great for taking care of your dental braces. These are handy little kits for taking to school, travel, overnight trips, camping, and so on. An ortho kit will normally contain a dual-headed toothbrush. One side for normal use and a soft abrasive side for helping to remove foods stuck in the braces. It'll contain one or more packets of dental floss plus floss threaders, which should be put to use after each meal. Some will have timers that you can use to time how long your brush. The kit will contain a small sized oral mirror which you can use to inspect your mouth and braces after brushing. And you receive a nice, handy pouch to hold everything. An ortho kit keeps everything you need close by in one convenient package.
An ortho kit will also contain a small bottle of mouthwash. Mouthwash is especially important when wearing braces because, no matter how diligent your are, it's practically impossible to reach all areas of your mouth when your mouth is filled with metal or plastic. Getting into the habit of using mouthwash after every meal will help to somewhat mitigate the brushing problem by helping to control the plaque buildup and also help prevent cavities.
3) Buy a water pick.
A water pick is great for dislodging food caught between crevices in your braces. In fact, some studies show that using a water pick is better than flossing for helping to clean braces. In addition, a water pick will help to massage the gums, leading to improved gum circulation and gum health. A water pick is not absolutely necessary to care for your braces, but it does make the job simpler.
4) Increase the frequency of your cleaning.
Normally, you have a teeth cleaning twice a year. But if you wear braces, that's not enough. Small particles of food will inevitably become lodged in your braces. Increasing the number of appointments with your dental hygienist to maybe 3 or even 4 times a year, while wearing braces, will help to keep your braces nice and clean.
Cleaning teeth with braces is an order of magnitude more difficult than cleaning teeth without braces, especially for children. but it's important that they get into the habit of doing it right early, to avoid greater orthodontic expenses down the road.
